Excerpts:
AS A TEENAGER, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO ACQUIRE BAKING SKILLS ?
I got inspired to baking skills because of my interest and passion for cake making. Prior to now, I tried learning/acquiring other skills in welding, football, photography, training to play saxophone, but all stopped at the primary/preliminary stages of my learning them. I could not continue and finish, but my interest and passion made me to have an unstoppable drive to learn: Initially from a one-week free skill acquisition programme, I was motivated to learn more, hence, I proceeded to a school of culinary arts (Food Perfect) in Port- Harcourt to perfect the skills in baking. At the end of 3 months regular training, I obtained a diploma in pastries, afterwards sat and wrote NABTEB Technical/Business examination s.
TELL US MORE ABOUT THE IMPACT YOU ARE MAKING IN YOUR COMMUNITY?
In my community now, young people come around my bakery, showing interest for vocational skills, as they are challenged by my determination to learn and know the skill of baking. I am sourcing for fund to enable me extend the knowledge and services to all and sundry in my community. Meanwhile, I bake cakes in my community for different occasions at very affordable prices. Daily, I bake very nutritious bread at giveaway prices and render small chops services (puff, spring rolls, pies) on request. Just the way I started; with enough funds I can be holding a free baking skill acquisition programmes for teenagers during their long holidays. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR TEENAGERS?
My advice to other teenagers is to look inwards and follow their interest and passion, as well as have a determined mindset until they achieve the ultimate goal. Acquiring a skill(s) or age does not stop your continuous education in the secondary or tertiary institutions, . I started learning diverse skills from age 12, my mother kept sending me to learn these skills.
I started teaching in her nursery and primary school. I never had a moment to move or roam about, I was learning the skills alongside going to school, all my long holidays were never free.
While waiting for university admission, I got diploma in computer science and I have just defended my project and written final examinations.
All these I have done and achieved as their coteenagers. So, they should stop giving excuses, stop wasting their time on social media, going to game houses to play games, rather think, look around and engage their energy, their fast reasoning/thinking thoughts to explore and diverse skills. Stop blames on one or two family short comings. (I started from a free skill no money acquisition). Disabuse your minds from how big to start, as you can start small, by starting from somewhere. During my training, we had no baking oven, I bake with pots on kerosene stove in my mothers kitchen. I am still advancing to perfect my baking skills, even as I roll out different cake designs for my customers. Jump out of your slumber for great talent is still lying low inside you. Take a step of faith now and God will back you up.
Who are your role models?
I have a few role models. First is my mother, she has always been my main role model, as an epitome of knowledge and creativity, endowed with great wisdom. From my childhood I observed that no one ever comes across her without learning something new. She is a motivator. My eldest sister is another role model, because of her determination and hard work to succeed in life. And today, she is a success, making me know that if I have a determination and work smart, I will be successful in life. Also, Mr. Uzor, who taught me the fundamentals in baking and made me know that males
can also excel in baking skills and be a good chef.
can also excel in baking skills and be a good chef.
WHAT IS YOUR LIFE PHILOSOPHY?
My philosophy of life is to take every opportunity that presents itself. Having concluded my pastries training with my cakes and bread making waves, I am still waiting to commerce my university education by 2018/2019 academic session.
Please do have a bite of Gad-David Cakes!!!
