YOUNG PEOPLE & CLIMATE CHANGE

Asking a young person in Nigeria How much do you know about Climate Change? would trigger responses such as What is Climate change; What does Climate change means; Climate change is implemented by the UN; That is an Oyibo (Western) problem and we have no business with global warming. Hmmm. So you think? Is that really true!

Research shows that the level of ignorance and abstractness of climate change awareness among young people has not only affected their lack of knowledge but also reduced their effective contributions toward actions to address Climate change. Air pollution lives with us; triggered by usage of firewood by majority in rural communities, the big industries in the cities. And we cannot forget the popular Niger-delta region that has been polluted with oil and gas, which poses serious harm to inhabitants of many communities there.

We must create a world where young people take lead on Climate issues, because we are the future. Indeed, the Climate plays a major role in our future. Therefore, young people between ages 10-24 accounts for one third of Nigerias estimated 170 million population, we should be informed, educated and equipped to leverage our voices with other youths around Green technology, Climate migration, Renewable energy and Air pollution.

Most importantly, the power of young people should not be underestimated in leading an inspiring and impactful movement to combat the harmful effects of Climate change. Are you still asking what Climate change is? Then just google it. (Smiles)
