International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women---- Domestic Violence.

'Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation, public health pandemic and serious obstacle to sustainable development. It imposes large-scale costs on families, communities and economies. The world cannot afford to pay this price.' Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General

Every November 25th has been declared as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, this is because : 'Violence against women is a human rights violation.Violence against women is a consequence of discrimination against women, in law and also in practice, and of persisting inequalities between men and women. Violence against women impacts on, and impedes, progress in many areas, including poverty eradication, combating HIV/AIDS, and peace and security. Violence against women and girls is not inevitable. Prevention is possible and essential. Violence against women continues to be a global pandemic.' (UN)
'Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence, and emotional abuse. The frequency and severity of domestic violence can vary dramatically; however, the one constant component of domestic violence is one partners consistent efforts to maintain power and control over the other' (NCADV)

Accordingly, the rise in domestic violence especially in developing countries has gone on a high side, we hear cases of married women that die because of the physical abuse they got from their spouses. This could be due to the fact of the cultural perspective of these countries concerning women. In most of these countries, it is believed that the husband has complete control of his wife and has power to beat or treat his wife anyhow since it is his property, women are mainly seen as sex slaves with no power of their own.

Teenz Global foundation was able to meet some people who gave their opinion on what Domestic Violence is and how it can be avoided.

Figbile Adebimpe
'Domestic violence is not just about the husbanding beating his wife, but it also involves raping her, as a form of punishing her and not handling his financial responsibility towards her positively. However, it can be avoided when ladies are empowered to know their rights that they are not made for that, she should have her own source of income which will make her husband respect her and she should know her role as a woman and then as a wife'.

Onwughalu Ijeoma Lilian
'Domestic violence against women is in an alarming great rate today, because so many women failed to pay attention to their spouses while they were yet to be married, a man who is violent in nature might have exhibited such traits one way or the other either through his spoken words or his actions during courtship but some women ignored all that warning signs just because they are in love. And these has resulted to lots of maltreatment in various form and even death in most cases. Ways to avoid these violence against women are:
1. Women should choose their life partners wisely
2. report to agencies that are advocates of  violence against women.
3. women should be properly informed against their rights so that they can be courageous to face situations of such scenario'.

Oluseyi Qozeem Soladoye
'In my family we are just two boys and that is what really makes me to hate violence against women. I love women. One of the ways we can really eliminate violence against women is women orientation. And this should start from individual family, and secondly we need to restore our culture and value about women.. Like seriously, concerning our culture and value we have missed the road and this really cause more violence against women in our society these days. I think if all these can be restored in our society, if not drastically eliminate violence against women, it will reduce it.'

In Teenz Global Foundation, we believe that every female has a right to her own life and should not be brought under any subjection of violence by the other sex. This is why the world, not just ladies, need to be re-oriented concerning the nature and rights of a lady.
